Have you tried going back to an early restore point? Also, you failed to mention a bunch of stuff. Are you running anti-virus software? You better, there's no excuse for that. What's your internet connection? If broadband, you NEED to be using a broadband router, PERIOD. Screw those lame USB connections, go Cat5, man!! Failure to use such a device leaves your machine open to attacks. The Windows Firewall software provided by Microsoft sucks and flat out doesn't work worth a crap to protect you, and neither does anyone elses. Based on how Windows is built, if you've hit the machine, then it's already too late. Lastly, you talk of software piracy. Big felonious no-no. Contact Microsoft, provide your license key and they should be able to send you a disk at little cost. There are a few versions of XP Pro: OEM, which lacks the fancy box and does a full install from a bootable CD. Retail fresh install, which is also a bootable CD. Upgrade(requires previous OS installed already) The install keys are NOT compatible, and certain runs are not compatible with other runs. Also, there are the ones before Service Pack 1 and the ones after Service Pack 1, so that's 6 different license algorithms at the very least. If you purchased your computer from Dell or Gateway, contact them for OS or install replacement discs, it's the best way to go. Any other pre-made consumer PC's? Same advise, go with their pre-load then upgrade as necessary. Get Norton Anti-Virus. $50. BUY IT. DO IT!! NOW!! I think you just need to run Norton Anti-Virus and that should make a LOAD of difference. Hit this URL: www.symantec.com/avcenter/Visit the Free Deepsight Analyzer, run it. That might take care of many of your issues. In fact, do this before buying Norton Anti-Virus. Some spyware and adware and viruses prevent NAV from installing.

so are you saying that your CPU is still working at this moment, but not well?
I agree, if you have not bought them before, you are SOOL. However I do know that there are pleanty of web sites that have these programs (XP, Photoshop, Norton, McAfee, Dreamweaver, Cakewalk Studio... what ever you want) for download. Sure it is illeagal, but if you do not mind takeing a risk of being caught and majorly sued (and really only 1 out of every 150 people get sued) then search bit torrent sites.
That is all I have to say.
