Michael Porter's WrestleBeat (9-2-04)
Hey Wrestling Fans! Welcome to another edition of WrestleBeat! I've got some interesting news and notes from the World of Professional Wrestling, so let's get to it.
First off, the UWA Academy of Professional Wrestling is NOW accepting applications. Don't be fooled by cheap, credential-lacking, shady schools in a bad part of town any longer. If you think you have what it takes to work in the greatest business in the world then your most guaranteed foot in the door is the United Wrestling Alliance Academy Of Professional Wrestling. The wrestling trainers consist of Chris "Psycho" Ward (who trained under Mike Modest) and retired pro wrestler Rob Wilds. The academy's training staff also consists of our professional gymnastics instructor, Dione Walker. Marty Jannetty will also be conducting an exclusive tutorial in November. The Academy guarantees a lot of one on one training as we only accept 10 students at a time, so once a spot is open, sign up immediately as they will go fast! For more information or contact info, go to www.unitedwrestlingalliance.com .
Also, the date is still OFFICIALLY set for the next UWA Event. It will be held on Saturday November 13th at the La Sierra Community Center in Carmichael, California. The date change from Nov. 6th coincides with the upcoming opening of the afore-mentioned UWA Academy of Professional Wrestling.
The Main Event of the evening remains the same, with the UWA Heavyweight Champion, the MASSIVE Native American, Warpath, putting his title on the line against the challenge of The Rocker, Marty Jannetty.
Also, the UWA is in negotiations to bring in for the Nov.13th Event, The Mighty Midgets! Others scheduled to appear on November 13th are UWA Tag Team Champions Chris "Psycho" Ward and Marko Bliskin, UWA Cruiserweight Champion, Rediculous Mike Rayne, UWA Hardcore Champion, Big Ugly J.D. Bishop, The UWA Kid, Rage and Steel (Full Metal Jacket) and MANY others! I understand that the UWA is also hoping to bring in TNA's Frankie Kazarian for Nov. 13th! Also, the UWA has been in contact with Vinnie Massaro, hoping to bring him in.
But, STILL no word or information on the possibility of my upcoming comfrontation with that slime-ball, Ric Micheals, in regards to our "loser leaves UWA" interlude. Again, hopefully, I will have more in the next edition of WrestleBeat.
The UWA also is trying to bring in Jason Styles, Wildstorm, Sarah DelRay, and Valentina J. Love for future appearances.
(card subject to change)

And now, on to the news. The following is reported by Georgiann Makropoulos on 1wrestling.com :
This is the email I received from my friend Bill Watts earlier today.
The entire staff of 1Wrestling.com wishes Steve Williams the very best as he battles this horrible illness.
"This is in reference to my dear friend, Steve Williams, who was All-Big Eight while at Oklahoma University on their football team, and also was a 4 time All-American in NCAA wrestling there-------and played pro football, and has wrestled professionally, first for me at Mid-South Sports, and in the latter years, mostly in Japan, where he is a true legend. His 'heart' is as big as his body-------which the last time he called, he was 'down' to under 214 pound, which is lower than his junior high weight.
But, he now faces the biggest challenge ever.............
Dear friends,
I got a call from Steve Williams (Dr Death Steve Williams of wrestling fame) brother yesterday-----with an update that 'Doc' wanted him to call me (along with a few others he listed) to keep us informed.
First, the radiation and chemotherapy has not worked. The cancer has apparently spread. In fact, Steve was having such a difficult time breathing well, they did an emergency tracheotomy (forgive my spelling.)
MD Anderson has examined him again, and established there is no cancer in his lungs------yet-----though they found some pneumonia.
They are fully recommending a laryngectomy (removal of Steve's voice box) to remove or eradicate the cancer in his voice box.
What a traumatic and emotional war this is!
Steve must face 'tremendous invasive surgery' for a 'chance to live.'
He is just 44 years old.
And the emotion of not being able to talk without a synthesizer------and to no longer be able to wrestle, which has been his life!
All that underlying the 'battle to live'------to see his daughter grow up, to have his family!
Now, the most wonderful thing in all this 'cloud of darkness,' the 'silver lining' in this thunderstorm, is that Steve accepted Jesus Christ some time back, and has a strong faith!
He knows where he will spend eternity-----------forever with His Lord and Savior!
What a comfort in this dire time-------to know He is not in this alone-------and to know his eternal life is secure in our Lord!
What an additional empowerment to encourage him in this fight for his life here.
Please raise him up in prayer to our Lord.
Your friend, Bill Watts
And, on a personal note, even though I, Michael Porter have never worked with or met Dr. Death Steve Williams, I would like to ask all of my friends and readers of WrestleBeat to send out their best wishes and prayers for Steve, to him and all of his family, friends, and fans. THANK YOU!
(update) I just got this from WWE.com: Wrestling great Steve "Dr. Death" Williams is fighting the toughest battle of his life. The 44-year old former WWE Superstar has unfortunately been stricken with cancer.
Known the world wide for his toughness, Williams has entertained wrestling fans for decades. Now the fans can help Williams. You can send your best wishes to: wellwishes@wwe.com to e-mail Steve and let him know that he is in your thoughts and prayers.
Let's change the mood with a humorous note regarding Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and Hollywood Hulk Hogan. From contactmusic.com :
Rapper SEAN 'P DIDDY' COMBS challenged HULK HOGAN to a wrestling match at a New York gig on Friday (27AUG04) - but backed out when he saw the mighty fighter running toward the stage.
The hip-hop star was delighted to see so many famous faces at his MANSION gig, and publicly welcomed the likes of JESSICA SIMPSON and former CREED rocker SCOTT STAPP.
But Combs soon regretted his offer to fight Hogan, for "$1 million to the winner".
Former World Wrestling Federation (WWF) star Hogan rapidly responded to the rapper's proposal and ran toward the stage - forcing a frightened Combs to rescind the offer.
Well...what did YOU think of the RAW Diva Search segment on RAW this past Monday night? For those who didn't see RAW last Monday night from the world-famous Cow Palace in San Francisco, there was special focus placed on the "Diva Search" segment as there was excess profanity involved from each of the women.
Each of the four finalists were told to cut promos insult each other. This turned out to be an obsenity-laced tyrade that had never been witnessed on WWE programming before, except for the possible exception of Bret "Hitman" Hart's explosion several years back on RAW, involving himself, Vince, Psycho Sid, and, I believe, The Undertaker. Infact, there was so much swearing that the censor was unable to keep up and bleep all the words.
A lot of people at the live RAW felt that the language used was not at all appropriate for the show, due to the fact that so many children were in attendance. But it did have an affect on viewers and for one of the first times, there were people actually interested in the Diva Search.
I hear that the RAW Diva Search has been extended for an additional week or two.
On August 30th, former WWE Superstar, Brock Lesnar was cut by the Minnesota Vikings. Lesnar was trying out as a Defensive Tackle. There is some talk that Brock may stick around with the Vikings on the Practice Squad or attempt a try-out with NFL Europe. There are reports that "The Next Big Thing" could possibly be back with the Vikings later in the season or, possibly be picked up by another NFL team. I also understand that a CFL (Canadian Football League), the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has expressed an interest in Lesnar.
And finally, WWE.com has announced the ticket prices for WrestleMania 21. Ringside seats will be $750, including the chair you get to take home. Other seats will be $200, $100, $75, $50, and $40. Ticket prices are down slightly from last year. WM21 tickets go on sale September 25th.
Well, that does it for another edition of WrestleBeat. I'll be back next time with more news and notes from the World of Professional Wrestling.
So, until next time, remember, KEEP BOTH FEET ON THE MAT AND YOUR PUNCHES ABOVE THE BELT. Later, Michael.
