Well, pro wrestling is nothing like amateur wrestling, and let's face it, if you're doing amateur wrestling, unless you're Olympic quality after college, you're funding it yourself and you're not making money at it. Is pro wrestling BS? WWE making a few billion bucks a years says that regardless of it being BS, it is a cash cow.
A key to keep in mind is that pro wrestling at its core is wrestling, or at least came from wrestling. Also, it is sports entertainment. What is real and what is fake depends on what is going on. I will say this: these guys are taking a pounding. You don't get body slammed and it's a "no pain" sort of thing. Knowing how to work with others and knowing how to properly do things to minimize injury are critical elements that MUST be mastered. If these guys were just flat out winging it, you'd see 4 or 5 guys a night leaving in an ambulance, some in a body bag. Despite training and cooperation, people do get hurt. Lots of guys have broken arms and legs, wrists and ankles, blown out knees and broken other bones. Why? Stuff happens, it isn't intentional. I would think that deep down, EVEN if you hated the other guy you're going up against, it isn't your goal to hurt that guy.
Of course, some "injuries" are written in to story lines to help facilitate real life issues as well, as well as suspensions and things like that. It takes a LOT of athleticism to be a wrestler, but one also has to have a strong mind as well. I mean, you don't necessarily have to be a college level physics instructor type mind, but being able to think intelligently and clearly.
Part sports, part entertainment, part art, part acting. Definately a well rounded package.
