Michael Porter's WrestleBeat (4-30-05)
Hey there again, Wrestling Fans! And welcome to another edition of WrestleBeat. I've got a lot of news and notes from the World of Professional Wrestling, including the loss of another of our Pro Wrestling Brothers! So, let's get right to business.
I am deeply saddened at this first series of reports:
I received an e-mail on Friday morning. We have lost another of our Brothers, with the passing of Chris Candido. Here is the e-mail that I received from Jeffery T. Capo:
"Chris Candido, 33, passed away due to a blood clot as a result of surgery on his leg.
Candido, a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, was also known for his role with the Bodydonnas in the WWF. He is married to Tammy "Sunny" Fytch.
Chris will truly be missed and our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends."
From TNAWrestling.com:
"TNA joins the entire wrestling world in mourning the untimely death of Chris Candido on Thursday."
Chris Candido's brother, Johnny posted the following message on the USAProWrestling.net message board this evening:
"I find it only fitting you hear the truth from me about the death of my bestfriend, brother, and soulmate. Chris died tonight due to a blood clot brought on by complications with his surgery.
I just want to tell everyone that in their sorrow, find a way to be happy that he went out the way he wanted to...on top of the world, blonde, tan, and loving life up until the last minute. Every ounce of my brother loved this sport, and for him to go out 2 or 3 years ago wouldn't have been a fitting end to the life of such a determined, passionate, and benevolent human being.
I truly view my brother as an angel as will all who knew him. Thanks to everyone for all your positive press, Chris went out a happy man and will forever live on as the(one of) greatest of all time. He would have had it no other way."
Now, in a more detailed report, the following is from PWTorch.com:
"We are receiving more information on the death of Chris Candido yesterday. Numerous people have told us he was eating dinner and suddenly collapsed.
Canddio had surgery on Monday evening after suffering a broken ankle Sunday at TNA's Lockdown PPV. TNA was paying for the surgery, where they inserted pins and needles inside his leg. Candido was released shortly after and arrived at the TNA Impact! tapings the next day to work.
Candido (in a wheelchair) managed The Naturals to a tag tam title victory on today's Impact!. Chris had also been very nervous on Sunday night but was happy to know that indy promoters were still planning to use him on their shows despite the injury.
We know he had been experiencing problems with vomiting since the surgery. There were problems getting pain medication as well because of years of drug abuse and the scars on his arms to show for it. Once doctors got clearance that he had cleaned up his life, he was given medication.
There is talk right now that his death may either be the result of a staph infection or a blood clot.
On behalf of everyone at this website, we want to send our condolences to the family and friends of Chris Candido. A truly great man who had cleaned up his life and was on a path to success. You will be missed."
Famed Pro Wrestling Writer-Photographer-Magazine Editor, Bill Apter added his thoughts on Chris Candido:
"I saw Chris Candido just last month at the NWA Cyberspace show in Wayne, New Jersey. Chris had a renewed focus and obviously beaten the demons of his past. I spoke with him on the telephone just a few hours before he went into the ring at Sunday's TNA pay-per-view and he was so onto his game. He sounded like a hungry rookie again.
Chris had a wonderful sense of humor and always told me I was like an uncle to him. We had some wonderful times together -- just the two of us - and with Tammy many times as well. The news of his death is one of severe shock and dismay. I will miss him so very much."
And so, would you please join me in sending out your thoughts and prayers to Tammy and ALL of the family, friends, and fans of Chris Candido.
And now...on to some better news:
The following also comes from PWTorch:
An altercation involving Reid Fliehr (son of WWE Superstar Ric Flair) in the North Carolina 4A Western Regional wrestling championships back in February led to both his Providence High and South Mecklenburg High being fined $1,000. Fliehr had just lost to Colby Hardin in sudden death overtime, and then Hardin imitated Ric Flair, and it turned into a fight that included spectators. It was all over in seconds. Fliehr will be suspended for his first three wrestling matches next season as well.
From Richard Gray comes this:

According to sources, there was some type of fight at the Birmingham, England hotel, where the WWE Raw stars were staying. The hotel was understaffed since there were WWE performers staying as well as a group of what was described as "kickboxing fans" who were in town for an event promoted by the International Kickboxing Federation on 4/24 in Birmingham.
The hotel lobby was said to have looked like a nightclub, with security completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people inside. Several of the kickboxing fans had were drunk and had words with WWE referee Jack Doan and "trying to show what tough guys they were to the fake pro wrestlers."
Soon after the WWE referee was struck down by the kickboxing fans, several WWE wrestlers descended upon the kickboxing fans and restrained them, warning them to calm down. It was more a situation where the fans were taken down and stretched to restrain them, as opposed to a full-fledged assault on the kickboxing fans.
The kickboxing fans didn’t seem to calm down after that and was continuously starting on them again. The wrestlers and hotel security all physically removed them from the hotel. No police was called and there was no further action taken.
From PWInsider.com:
TNA star Dustin Runnels was arrested this past Sunday April 24th in Orlando, Florida following a domestic dispute with his girlfriend at the hotel the pair were staying at.
Runnels was taken into State Custody by Orange County authorities and was later bonded out of custody. PWInsider.com has not yet verified the exact charges, but has verified he was in custody and later released.
Rhodes was not in attendance at the Impact! tapings last night, although according to several sources, his girlfriend was backstage at the show.
Thanks to Ryan Clark:
To follow-up on what we reported earlier, Dustin Rhodes was arrested on Sunday and charged with misdemeanor battery after a fight with his girlfriend.
Rhodes went to court yesterday and was ordered to stay away from his girlfriend, stop the use of alcohol or narcotics, and maintain a separate residence.
We're told someone posted bond for him at $1,000 and he was able to get released.
Rhodes was not at the tapings yesterday but several sources have noted his girlfriend was there.
Sean Waltman has been upset due to TNA not using him at the Impact taping this week. He also apparently was upset because he thinks TNA owes him money. Some have gone as far as to say he has given TNA notice, but that is not confirmed and some state things were smoothed over and it was just a case of Waltman venting.
Andy Steven reports this:
Rob Van Dam is set to return to WWE action approximately a month after the WWE presenting the ‘ECW One Night Stand PPV’. RVD has stated himself that he will be unable to wrestle in time for the June 12 ECW PPV special, however this was months ago, he recently said on his website, “If anyone misses seeing me on the tube, watch the ECW pay per view for my return. This pay per view will live up to the standards all ECW hardcore fans have held for the company and it will beat expectations, because for this one night only…we won’t hold back, and we won’t be held back”.
Well, that does it for another, albeit SAD edition of WrestleBeat. I'll be back next time with more news and notes from the Wonderful World of Professional Wrestling.
So, until next time, KEEP BOTH FEET ON THE MAT AND YOUR PUNCHES ABOVE THE BELT! Later, Michael.
