Michael Porter's WrestleBeat (9-29-05)
Hey there again, Wrestling Fans! And welcome to another edition of WrestleBeat. I've got a lot of news and notes from the World of Professional Wrestling. So, let's get right to business.
First up...this SPECIAL Earthquake Watch Update:
I just (Monday) got off of Instant Messenger with 'Quake! He saw that I was online, and he contacted me.
He IS back home after several days away from home due to Hurricane Rita.
John and his family returned to find their home yesterday (Sunday) just as they left it...with NO DAMAGE!
John told me that the trip from outside of Houston to Dallas, which is about 170 miles, took a TOTAL of 24 driving hours! This was due to ALL of the traffic leaving the Houston area! John says the "Interstates were parking lots". He then informed me that the return trip took only 5 hours!
'Quake had another Radiation treatment today (Monday). When I asked him how they were going, he said "Treatments are going good I guess. I will know more next week after I'm done."
In closing, we discussed that in a few days...AFTER he rests up from his long hours on the road because of Hurricane Rita, we WILL be conducting an EXCLUSIVE online Interview, where Earthquake John Tenta will discuss his career, his life, his battle with Cancer, and his recent brush with Hurricane Rita.
With that, we said our good-byes and that was it...for NOW.
I know that we are ALL happy that John and his family are SAFE and back at home...a home that suffered NO DAMAGE!
OK...on to the INDY news:
Alright...in last week's WrestleBeat I told you that THIS week, I would have an interview with WCWA Superstar, Alexis Smirnoff Jr. The interview was conducted at the Barbacoa Breeze Restaurant, in Citrus Heights, CA., and proved to be a VERY interesting interview! Mr. Smirnoff was TOTALLY up-front, forthright, and BRUTALLY honest in some cases! He "shoots" on a few subjects and individuals. I'm certain that, as an INDY Wrestling Fan, you will find this an interesting read! So...here goes:
MP: Here we are at the FABULOUS Barbacoa Breeze Restaurant, in Citrus Heights, CA. I would like to THANK the Owners and Management of Barbacoa Breeze for allowing us this opportunity to conduct this interview here in their wonderful establishment at 5623 Sunrise Blvd. right here in Citrus Heights!
First off...let me THANK YOU, Mr. Smirnoff for granting me this interview. I know that you're very busy.
MP: Exactly how long have you been in Professional Wrestling?
ASJ: As far as wrestling I actually started in 1998 and wrestled for the last three months of that year and then I wrestled the first seven months of 1999 until I was injured...almost fatally in a car accident, and ended up breaking my back. I spent the next two years rehabing, just so I could be able to be as active as I had been in 1999, just before the accident. In early 2001 I met Rick Rockwell and Sam "the Tonga Kid" Fatu who knew "Senior" (Alexis Smirnoff Sr.) and agreed to train me after I was medically cleared. Ironically the first day, Sammy trained me, was two years to the day in August of 2001 that I had my accident.
MP: Did your father, the GREAT Alexis Smirnoff try to disuade you from "the business"?
ASJ: Yes, But obviously that didn't work.
MP: Well, did he encourage you in a choice of careers?
ASJ: Father wanted me to be a Lawyer or a Judge.
MP: You are currently wrestling for a Northern California Independant Promotion, WCWA (West Coast Wrestling Alliance). How do you feel you have been treated there, and just what is your CURRENT status with WCWA?
ASJ: First off since November of 2004 the WCWA Owner Paul Brown has treated me with the up-most respect and made me feel very, very welcome. I now consider the WCWA my home away from home. My status with the WCWA as far as I know is if they have a show Im there for the company.
MP: What are your thoughts on your reigns as WCWA Pacific Rim Ring of Fire Champion?
ASJ: Before I say anything, I was super proud that I was the first Pacific-Rim Ring of Fire Champion. That match ranks up there as one of my all time favorites. Ok I really thought the first title reign would have been longer, with that said Pierston Steel and I had one hell of a run and I think is the feud of the year so far in the WCWA. I was a little disappointed that I lost the Title so soon after winning it though. The second title reign I thought and from what was indicated to me was going to lead into a promotion towards the WCWA Title push. Its yet to happen and it may I just think some things in the "Office" have changed and that may have been delayed. I do wish both reigns had been longer though. I really loved being the first Pacific-Rim Ring of Fire Champion.
MP: Give us some of your thoughts on the CURRENT Indy Wrestling Scene?
ASJ: I think that the Indy's have definitely got better, the WCWA has developed some good talents like Jason Vega and Hellfyre, and myself. SPW, they've got the best Champion in the history of that company in "Old School" Oliver John. That guy is a total package. BRAWL has appeared on the scene with Pogo, D-Unit, Trent Hemerage, Rik Luxury, DJ Rizz and Vic Grimes as their main-stay wrestlers. Even NAW is returning I think that is good for the buisness more indies means more work.
MP: Who would you consider your TOUGHEST opponent?
ASJ: Thats tough because as you know Ive been in the Squared Circle with a lot of Big Names and a lot of great indy workers. But I'll start with the names, Mustafa Saed for ECW fame was the strongest, Shawn Stasiak of WWE/WCW fame was the most athletic, Norman Smiley of WCW fame was the most suprising. Konnan of WCWA/TNA fame was the drunkest. the Various "Samoan Wrestling Dynasty" members are usually the meanest, but taught me the most. In one night Johnny Paine also taught me alot. When it comes to Indy wrestlers., El Flaco Loco is my greatest Indy opponent EVER, and I think that he and I had my best match. Jason Vega is a STUD and I can't wait to get back in the ring with him. I think Steel and I have another feud in our future, he's one hell of a wrestler.
MP: Who are some of your favorite Indy Wrestlers, and WHY are THEY your favorites?
ASJ: 1) "Old School" Oliver John -Like I said earlier, he is the total package and early in my training I trained with him.
2) Rik Luxury-He runs a close second to Ollie and I cant wait to have "run" with him. This guy can do anything and I wouldn't be suprised to see him on TNA wrestling in the X-Division.
3) Helfyre-That guy's as strong as d**ned mule, one hell of a wrestler, and almost as evil as I am.
4) The "Bad-Apples"-I love the "Bad-Apples" these guys should be a Tag Team in every promotion they wrestle in and I'm glad that the WCWA had kept them as a Tag Team. These two are young, big and strong and will be big-time players, I feel in the future.
5) El Flaco Loco-The reason SPW has survived, he's their HOGAN, one hell of a Sports-Entertainer.
6) Virgil Kensington-Belmont III-If he were six inches taller and 20 pounds heavier, I think he would already be somewhere big-time.
7) Jason Vega-I think one day he will make one hell of a heel. Right now he's like on a three year run as the WCWA top face and his wrestling just keeps getting better and better every match he has.
8) Shane Dynasty-I tell everyone getting in the buisness if they want to learn how to work the crowd verbally, watch Shane. That guy is quicker on the mic than a naked Michael Jackson at a all-boys school.
MP: Just when do YOU think you might get a shot at the WCWA Heavyweight Championship?
ASJ: Like I said earlier I thought I would have by now gotten that shot but with Helfyre the Champ, it's likely I won't get a shot at the title until after he loses it. It is something that I think I've earned. I've done anything and everything I was asked by the WCWA, and I think even Paul Brown will tell you that a lot of the fans that come to the arena is due to feuds I've had and the word of mouth of just pure hatered for me. I do want a shot...one shot at the WCWA Title. I think I'd be a great Champion.
MP: If you could choose ANY of your own opponents in the Nor-Cal Indy Scene, just WHO would you compete against? And WHY?
ASJ: "Old School" Oliver John, Rik Luxury, Helfyre, Cory Dayton, Pogo the Clown, Vic Grimes, Mustafa Saed, Chance Calloway, Paul Isadora, and El Hijo de Chupacabra.
MP: Do you still have any contact with The Tonga Kid, Sam Fatu?
ASJ: Sadly NO. Sam is off wrestling for Jesus or God who ever is going to pay him the most money in the name of SAM.
MP: Just WHY did you "rip" on The Tonga Kid Sam Fatu?
ASJ: I love Sam, his Wife and there kids, but Sam is about Sam when it comes to money. Just ask Rick Rockwell or his brother-in-law Vinnie, "the High-roller" Violence if you have any questions about that statement. Sam can still go in the ring, but Sam makes sure to squeeze as much money out of you as possible whether you're a wrestler or a promoter or and eye doctor or what ever you do in life. Basically, what I'm saying is Sam wants everything for free because he was the WWF's TONGA KID twenty years ago and thinks he should still be getting WWF money. I have been there many, many, many, many times when Sam has told Promoters and Booker's, I'm paraphrasing here... you pay me this much for a squash match. You don't need to pay those indy "MARKS" (speaking of the other wrestlers). I'm the one who they (speaking of the Fans) came to see not them (speaking of the wrestlers), they don't deserve to be paid. I'm the one Vince signed. As a matter of fact the last time I saw Sam I told him I was wrestling full-time for the WCWA, and he told me to tell Paul Brown he'd work a five minute squash match against you for eight hundred bucks. Cody Angle was witness to this. I told Sam he can I disagree. I never let him squash me when I was a GREEN kid, and I sure as hell wasn't going to NOW and that Paul Brown sure as hell wasn't going to pay him eight hundred bucks. That's one reason why I ripped Sam Fatu.
MP: Why don't we see Alexis Smirnoff Jr. in MORE Indy Promotions?
ASJ: I will be on the NAW, October 9th. in Modesto, CA. Politics, I won't kiss some guy's ass that is best buddies with the Promoters, so I don't get booked and I won't wrestle for free, like most promotions want wrestlers to do, I'm not talking for a good cause like a fund-raiser for a High-School or Sunami relief, I'm talking about day to day promoters who are making a ton of money, who don't want to pay at all. They expect you to go out there and have a tables, ladder, and chairs match and and go home empty handed. I'm perfectly fine working for the WCWA. We have more shows coming up and I'll be on all of them. I tell everyone who asks me this same question...if the Promoters don't want to book me, it's their fan's loss.
MP: What do you like MOST about Professional Wrestling? And what do you like the LEAST?
ASJ: MOST: The comradery in the locker room, or at least the WCWA locker room, the Entertainment Factor and the physicality of the matches.
LEAST: The fact that you drive three hours for "crap" pay.
LEAST: The fact that some promoters use hardly-trained wrestlers or back-yarders and put them "over" guys who've spent years actually training.
MP: I understand that you are starting up your own INDY Promotion. Can you tell us a little about it?
ASJ: Yes I am...with two of my oldest friends, people who are not in the wrestling business and to quote DDP's WWE gimmick, "That's A Good Thing". Right now, we a concentrating on a full-time start in July of 2006, I'll even have a ring crew spot for you Porter, we may have one to two shows before, just to get a head-start financially and to get our name out there.
MP: Let's play a little Name Association. I will toss out a "Name" and you respond with your thoughts on that person. Are you up for that?
ASJ: Yes
MP: Alright...let's start out with POGO, Joe Applebaumer?
ASJ: Clowns scare me, but I have the utmost respect for Joe A.
MP: WCWA Announcer, Blackie Grubich?
ASJ: A better Booker than Ring Announcer.
MP: "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka?
ASJ: I love Jimmy. Who criminey jeezeing doesn't?
MP: The Honky Tonk Man?
ASJ: Bad taste in clothes, but and awesome wrestler.
MP: The Big Ugly JD Bishop?
ASJ: Should have done more with SPW than just at the Colonial, but some people are just complacient.
MP: Rage?
ASJ: Now that Paul Brown got his hands on him he's become a better wrestler.
MP: "Wild Samoan" Afa?
ASJ: If Vince is the CREATOR of Sports Entertainment, Afa is the supplier and a Legend.
MP: Wildthing Rob Wilds?
ASJ: Who? I did that about ten minutes ago in the bathroom.
MP: OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!
MP: Chris Ward (Casanova)?
ASJ: Nice guy.
MP: Juggalo Jim Cooley?
ASJ: Love him or hate him, Jimmy draws. Those "freaks" ( the Juggalos) go whereever he goes.
MP: U.S. Steele?
ASJ: Nice guy. A good family man.
MP: Cody Angle?
ASJ: Glad he didn't play politics, but its sad because of one guy he doesn't get booked at WCWA anymore. But once I get running, he will get booked.
MP: Double R Rick Rockwell?
ASJ: My BROTHER, my BEST FRIEND, and the FIRST HONEST person I ever met in the BIZZ, I love that guy.
MP: Ridiculous Mike Rayne?
ASJ: Mike awesome. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever been around, and one hell of a wrestler.
MP: And, in CONCLUSION...and I know that I'm taking my life into my own hands here...but how about Michael Porter?
ASJ: Lets see...you're a liar, a cheat, and a real SON OF A pregnant dog! So, why the HELL am I sitting here? Just KIDDING, Porter! If Rick was the first honest guy I met in the business, YOU'RE the second. I wish every Nor-Cal Promotion used you one way or the other...as an announcer or a manager or even just as a back stage AGENT. You've got more experience than entire locker rooms nowadays. I've got the up-most respect for your OLD ass.
MP: Well...Mr. Smirnoff, are there any final words or thoughts that you might have for my readers? Anything that you would like to leave them with?
ASJ: Thanks for the Interview. I hope you liked the food. I too would like to thank Mike Mitchum, the owner and Jennifer Espinosa, the G.M. for letting us conduct your interview here. I just want everyone out there to know that Alex Smirnoff Jr. is just getting started, and I am looking forward to my future with the WCWA for a very long time. And once I win the WCWA Heavyweight Championship I'll grant you the FIRST interview as the Champ.
MP: Ok...so there you have it from Alexis Smirnoff Jr...WCWA Superstar. Thank you again, Alexis and my Best Wishes for continued success in your career.
And now, speaking of WCWA...this comes from Brian Elliot in regards to the next WCWA show at the WCWA Arena 2312 Monument Blvd. in Pleasant Hill on Saturday Oct.1st:
"Onto the 1st of October, Blackie Grubich has demanded that Rage face Helfyre in a match for the Devil Mountain Belt, which means no rules.
Tecnical Terror will defend their newly won tag team belts against a top contender. The Bad Apples think it should be them. We'll see how that develops, as teams like Devil Mountain, the Douglas Brothers and many others are making the same claim. When the dust clears, I'll let you know. Look for two tag matches on the next show.
We are trying to raise enough money to lure Flaco Loco back to the WCWA Arena to defend his belt against a still-angry Bonzai Bruce Bukakki.
Virgil Kensington Belmont III has already R.S.V.P'ed for the next show and so has Smirnoff, who is seriously looking to climb the ladder for the gold. Any gold.
It's going to be another wild one and I'll let you know as it firms up.
Also, the tentative date for the Katrina Relief Show is October 8th and will probably be held at a local high school. Again, we'll let ya know."
