Michael Porter's WrestleBeat (11-22-04)
Hey again there Wrestling Fans! And welcome to another edition of WrestleBeat!
WOW!!! It was 41 years ago TODAY that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas!
First off, I'm sorry that I haven't been back with a column for a little while, and haven't given any updates on Earthquake John Tenta lately...BUT, my computer has been in the shop TWICE in the last TWO WEEKS, and I hadn't been able to get online for a few days before that. But, I have MY computer back and I figured that it was time for another column. PLUS, I have a short update on 'Quake, and his progress in his battle against cancer.
Anyways...this is a quote from 'Quake:
"Well, a bit of bad news for me. The tumor didn't shrink any farther during the last two sessions. I've already had another chemo session with different medicine, and will get another scan done in a couple weeks. Spirits are still good, but was a little bummed out.
'Quake"
Anyway...from MY point of view...and being a cancer survivor myself, I say that even though maybe the tumor DIDN'T shrink any more...BUT, at least it DIDN'T grow in size either!!! And, at least THAT is good news!
So, PLEASE keep the prayers and well wishes coming in! They DO work! I know...they worked for ME!
I'll be back with MORE updates on the BIG 'QUAKE when I hear anything! THANKS!
Also, I have received several e-mails from my old friends, former WWF/E Superstars, Marty Jannetty and Sensational Sherri Martel in the last few days! It's GREAT hearing from them! I'm hoping to do some online Q & A interviews with them in the near future!
Alright, on Nov 13th, the UWA had their BIG event at The LaSierra Community Center in Carmichael, CA.! Since I was NOT announcing and I was in the back, preparing for my "Loser Leaves UWA" Match with Ric Micheals, I was not able to see all of the matches. And therefore I am not able to give detailed discriptions on the matches. However, here are the Quick Results, with the exception of MY match:
Match 1. In a surprise match from Vega and Eric, two students of the UWA Academy of Professional Wrestling, in a 5-minute exhibition match. With the rest of the Academy students surrounding the ring in a basic Lumberjack Match, the match ended in a time-limit draw. Great work from Vega and Eric!
Match 2. The UWA Kid defeated Ridiculous Mike Rayne to win the UWA Cruiserweight Championship.
Match 3. France's Most Cunning Athelete, L’Empereur defeated Kid Kool, then challenged any other wrestler in the dressing room to a match. Surprisingly, Vince Vicallo accepted the challenge and after a battle, defeated L'Empereur.
Match 4. In the Special Attraction, featuring The Mighty Midgets, Short Sleeve Sampson defeated Todd Stone in what has been described as a greatly entertaining match that was loved by the entire family...especially the kids in attendance!
Match 5. In the first match after the Intermission, yours truely Michael Porter pinned UWA Manager of Champions, Ric Michaels in a “Loser Leaves UWA" Match. This match featured outside interference by Micheals' co-horts, UWA Tag Team Champions Psycho Chris Ward (who paid-off Referee Martin) and Marko Bliskin on behalf of Micheals, and Wildthing Rob Wilds and Ridiculous Mike Rayne, who made the save for me as Micheals, Ward, and Bliskin were stomping the snot out of me after I had received a faceful of powder or something, followed by a clothes-line from Micheals. The next thing I knew, I was being urged by The Wildthing to pin Micheals, who lay flat on his back in the middle of the ring. I crawled over and covered Micheals, but there was NO count! Ref Martin refused to make the count, because Ward had paid him off. So, Wilds proceeded to give Martin "The Wilds-Driver", then took off his shirt, revealing a referee's shirt underneath! Rob then made the 1-2-3 count, and declared ME the winner of the match! Rob then gave me a new UWA contract, and I signed it right there in the middle of the ring, using Wilds' back to sign it.
Then, Wilds and I led the fans as we sang "Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Hey-Hey-Good-Bye", as Ric Micheals was formally FIRED, Donald Trump-style!
Then, UWA Commissioner, Doug Damien came out to address the Ref Martin situation. He and Rob Wilds discussed it, then Wilds made the announcement that Martin was also FIRED from the UWA!
Match 6. Former UWA Cruiserweight Champion, Ridiculous Mike Rayne then challenged Psycho Chris Ward and Marko Bliskin for the UWA Tag Team Titles. Then, in a shocking turn, Super Dave stood up from the crowd and teamed with Rayne to defeat Ward and Bliskin for the UWA Tag Team Championship! Then, in another unbelievable turn of events, Marko Bliskin unmasked, and turned out to be revealed non other than Sensational Shawn Gunn! "Super-Diculous" then proceed to take over the faction known as The Apocalypse!
Match 7. In the Main Event of the evening, The MASSIVE Native American Warpath defeated PWI (Pro Wrestling Iron Fighter, Vinny Massaro to retain the UWA Heavyweight Championship.
The attendance was approximately 130 or 135, with 103 PAID! A GREAT time was had by ALL!
SPECIAL NOTE: I may also be doing some online interviews with Mighty Midgets, Todd Stone and Short Sleeve Sampson in upcoming editions of WrestleBeat! I met them at the Nov.13th UWA event, and they are to be in touch with me soon about when! I'm looking forward to that!
And now, on to the National News:
First up, this comes from TNAwrestling.com :
NEW MATCHES ADDED TO TURNING POINT ON DECEMBER 5!
SIX MAN MAIN EVENT MATCH
The Macho Man Randy Savage, The Phenomenal AJ Styles and The Charismatic Enigma Jeff Hardy vs. The Kings of Wrestling (Jeff Jarrett, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash)
Turning Point on December 5 will feature the in-ring wrestling return of the legendary “Macho Man” Randy Savage as he teams with TNA superstars AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy to take on The Kings of Wrestling! Savage has come to TNA to stop Jarrett, Hall and Nash and has enlisted Styles and Hardy as his backup at Turning Point! Can the superstar trio take down the three kings before they complete their hostile takeover of TNA?
SERENGETI SURVIVAL MATCH
The Alpha Male Monty Brown vs. Abyss Two of the biggest and baddest monsters in TNA will clash on December 5 as The Alpha Male faces Abyss in a “Serengeti Survival Match”! On this week’s Xplosion broadcast, The Alpha Male challenged Abyss to the match - which we’re told will have some very violent stipulations! Tune in to Friday’s Impact for further information on this Pay-Per-View collision between The Alpha Male and Abyss!
SPECIAL CHALLENGE MATCH
Diamond Dallas Page vs. Raven On Friday’s Impact, Diamond Dallas Page once again returned to TNA with a BANG, costing Raven his match against Johnny B. Badd. Later in the broadcast, Raven challenged DDP to fight him at Turning Point. The question now is, will Diamond Dallas Page accept - and what is the true story behind the volatile history between Page and Raven?
All this and much more on Sunday, December 5 on the “Turning Point” Pay-Per-View - including “Six Sides of Steel” with America’s Most Wanted vs. Triple X and an X Division Championship Match with Petey Williams vs. Chris Sabin!
From Joey Styles and 1Wrestling.com comes the following:
JERRY LAWLER SIGNS NEW FIVE YEAR CONTRACT WITH WWE
Jerry Lawler told Fox Sports Net that he has signed a new five year agreement with WWE.
In my opinion, Lawler has the best job in wrestling in that he makes a reported $250,000 annually and is only required to be at live RAW and RAW pay-per-view events. He is not required to attend house shows or do in-studio announcing duties in WWE's Stamford, Connnecticut production facilities. Lastly, as an announcer, he is permitted to wrestle on indy shows (unlike WWE wrestlers) and works for no less than $1,000 per appearance.
It's good to be "The King" and yes...I am jealous. Is Jim Ross retiring anytime soon?
Also from Joey Styles and 1Wrestling.com:
HARDCORE HOLLY SHOOTS ON RENE' DUPREE AT WWE HOUSE SHOW?
Several pro wrestling websites including 1wrestling.com have recieved several different yet very similar reports from ringside fans at WWE's weekend house show in Syracuse, NY that state that Bob "Hardcore" Holly may have hit Rene' Dupree with an excessively stiff chairshot to the head followed by shoot punches and kicks to the face.
1wrestling.com will attempt to get additional information on this alleged incident.
Next up, apparently, the USA Network may be trying to lure WWE RAW back to the network from Spike TV. The story is that USA will be making a HUGE offer for WWE Programming to return to USA. I truely doubt that this will happen, as Spike TV's affiliation with NBC Networks Programming is said to be MUCH more profitable to WWE.
From Georgiann Makropoulos and 1Wrestling.com:
A BENEFIT SHOW FOR SABU IS BEING ORGANIZED FOR DECEMBER 12th IN DETROIT, MI.
A benefit show is being put together to help former ECW World champion SABU with his medical expenses on Sunday, December 12th in the Detroit, Michigan area. The event, which will be officially announced within the next week, and is being organized by TNA's Scott D'Amore, among others.
Talent committed to appear include Jeff Hardy, Raven, Team Canada, America's Most Wanted, Petey Williams, and Kid Kash, with many more still to be announced.
Sabu, who was credited with putting Extreme Championship Wrestling on the map on WWE's Rise and Fall of ECW DVD, was recently released from the hospital after a long stay due to a myriad of back problems.
Well, that does it for another edition of WrestleBeat. I'll be back next time with more news and notes from the Wonderful World of Professional Wrestling.
So, until next time, KEEP BOTH FEET ON THE MAT AND YOUR PUNCHES ABOVE THE BELT!
Later, Michael.
